60 is the new 40...Well, maybe not

I never thought I would be here.  I don't know what I expected - I guess I thought I would magically stop at 40.  Ummm...nooooo.  No one does. Actually, even 50 wasn't so bad.  I breezed by that one.
But 60.  Wow. That's different.

These videos took the sting out of it anyway...

If you're over 50, turn up the volume.
(If your under 40, go ahead and snicker...but your day will come...)

OK...moving on...I'm 60 but I still have a daughter in college so I mentally feel like I'm 21 (except that I know a whole lot more about guys).   At any rate, because of Lauren, I am still talking and thinking about girl stuff like clothes and makeup and reality shows - yep, ask me anything about the Kardashians and Teen Mom - I am down with it.

So I thought the next YouTube video was very apropos. I liked it because she uses Mac products that you can buy in the US, she tells you what brushes to use and she is doing her mother's makeup.  She's really sweet about it too....
Aren't daughters wonderful?

Make-up tutorial for mature women.

If you want to feel younger when you're 60, have a baby girl when you're 40.
However, keep in mind that having a teenage daughter when you're over 50 might age you a bit - you just have to survive that part.

And, on I final note...this sure made me fell a lot better...

Wrinkles...Ugh...

If you're over 29, you're going to see wrinkles.  Sorry, but very true.  Sooo....

Embrace them!

Wrinkles

Weather

Here are some pictures that Lauren and Drew sent me of their weather.  I love getting these pictures!

This one is of West Lafayette, Indiana right before Thanksgiving...Pretty, isn't it?

Right after Thanksgiving...the first snow of the year...

Brrrrr.....
Ahhhh... I know where Lauren was when she took this - it's from a glassed-in overpass in the School of Management.  So when she finished with class, she had about a 3/4 mile walk back to her house.

OH!  this was amazing!!  This was a pic of the latest tornado that was forming over Indianapolis and Lafayette.  Chi Omega spent over an hour in the basement, just in case a tornado set down.  I came home from shopping one day and turned on CNN while I sat down for lunch and...the weather guy said: (Seriously)

"Everyone in West Lafayette needs to seek shelter immmediately if they have not already done so - a tornado is imminent."  (!!!)

What!!! I popped off the couch and texted Lauren right away.  She was already in the basement with the other girls in the house.  She gets half panicked about these events and half non-chalant...I guess because everyone around her takes it in stride since they grew up with this tornado stuff.  The rest of us start imaging the Wizard Of Oz!

Oh...and this next one is Drew's weather pic from Santa Monica.  Actually it looks like Manhattan Beach but whatever...they're only a couple of miles apart.

And here is Giovanna, with their bikes, along the beach.  (Sorry Lauren...)

Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree...

First Christmas trees.  Oh,  What Memories!

For Kevin...
Lauren is holding a bottle of the Gloria Ferrar Champagne from Napa Valley
(or Sonoma ??) that we got them for their engagement.

And Drew's first tree...very nice!  Giovanna had some input?  ...

Dave and I still have the ornament that Ging and Boomp gave us for our "First" Christmas. We arrived in California for Thanksgiving dinner and they were stuck with us for a month!! Somehow we managed to move into our townhouse about 3 days before Christmas.  I remember it like it was yesterday.  But...it was a looong time ago.  36 Christmases later...those memories are really sweet.

We saw Boomp the other night and Barbara had a little tree all decorated for him in his room, with Biggie the dog on his lap for company. Merry Christmas Boomp!

It's Off To Work We Go...

So what we've been up to...Dave (and his buds Marshall and Pud) put in a stone wall and a crushed granite topping over the septic tank.  Ugh.  But it looks a lot better.

 Fixing Boats...

Fixing "Stuff" -  Never-ending.

Having friends visit....Todd's daughter Kelly and John and Bailey and Brody.  They actually stayed on after we left and we were so happy they could have family time.  John took Brody out on the back 40 on the ATV and we understand some hunting lessons took place.

Well, the fun ends sometime and since it's winter, we're back to painting.  Or, I should say Dave is back to painting....

I'm hittin" the books and doing paperwork.

And then fixing up Brockton.  A looootttttaaaa work there...

And coming up for air...

In between Lauren and Drew came home for Thanksgiving and we saw Kevin too and went to Doug and Michele's for turkey....but I didn't make them get their pictures taken.  I would have loved to have pictures but I gave them a break.  We had a really nice dinner at Giovanna's parents' house too but I spared them my camera, too.
And tomorrow... I get to go along on a wedding dress shopping trip!  The last dress I shopped for was my own - 36 years ago...so this will be a fun day!

Lost Weekend

Lauren came home for Thanksgiving vacation and "invited" me (you need an invitation, apparently) to joint Pintrest.com.

Well.............had I only known.

It became an addiction.  I was barely here all weekend.  Drew was laughing because so many of my conversations were sprinkled with references to something I had seen on Pintrest.  Well. I have FINALLY torn myself away!

I do want to share some things I saw there.  So here they are...

could DIY for christmas?
If I were a Grandma, I would love one (or more) of these!

Christmas crafts
Or this...can you imagine!  How sweet!

Grandma's House...
Wow.  This is really nice.

And I found a bunch of recipes too.  Like this one for a casual dinner
(from tasteofhome.com)

Stuffed Pepperoni and Cheese Bread. This looks so good!

Heed my warning though:  Maybe you shouldn't go to Pintrest.com

If you do....see you sometime next year!

Thanksgiving On My Walks

Solitary Walks
Quiet
Gratitude
My walk on Sunday
The Vineyards.  The grapes have already been harvested.

And some people think it's all sun, sand and beaches in California!  This is Northern California,  in wine country, with seasons, agriculture and harvests.

I could walk for hours here.
Lake Tulloch Walk
We'll be spending Thanksgiving Day with our friends Doug and Michele and their (grown up) kids and Michele said she wanted so much for all of us to go .....on a walk.  I can't wait!

                                                   Happy Thanksgiving

Hometown

What d' ya know,  Late Night Television is making our hometown of Pleasanton famous!

Locals call Pleasanton "P-town".  No kidding.  We even have sweatshirts sporting the nickname...

Craig Ferguson did have me in stitches about our local pizza place called "Gay 90's"...it has been there for ages - loooong before "gay" had any other meaning besides "fun".  And the pizza there is fabulous! That's the place I make the family take me on my birthday every year because my birthday dinner is always pizza and chocolate cake.

 The monologue is kinda funny:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jtEe93AWFM
And, he's right about Dean's cafe - it's a dive but locals go there for breakfast (not me so much) - they need to at least clean the windows.  Yuk. The guys like it, though..

But, I really want to put in a plug for John Madden's Rose Hotel.  The Madden family, John (and sons) from football fame, own a lot of stuff in town because this is where their family has lived for decades and they built this hotel about 10 years ago and...they open it up to soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.  It's a small luxury hotel - very high-end...rooms at $$$$$.  But if you are returning from the war (and we have a lot of soldiers in uniform around here because they're in the reserves at Camp Parks) you can spend a free weekend at the Rose Hotel and get a bunch of discounts to local venues.

Every one of the light-posts downtown has an American flag flying from it along with two or more yellow ribbons, each with the names of a Pleasanton soldier serving in the war.

Pleasanton has a lot of high tech business but also a lot of the 1950's in it.

It's a good town.

A Whale of A Good Time!

A few posts ago I wrote about what a nice weekend we had at Jon and Danielle's wedding in Santa Cruz and that we stayed at the Dream Inn where the wedding was held...the following day Dave and I took off for a drive along the coast.  We posted pictures of the dogs running in the waves..well, at that time Dave spotted something in the water off the coast and swore it was a whale but we could never have gotten a picture of it because it was pretty far away.  I followed it with our binoculars and it kept surfacing but then disappeared.

Well.............watch this!  With the Dream Inn in the background.  WOW.  And this happened right off the beach in the post about the wedding...about 2 days later - it was a few hundred yards from the wedding breakfast where the girls were playing volleyball.  Who knows what's out there in the ocean - so CLOSE!!!

The whale came up out of the water a few hundred yards off this beach (on the left).  The Dream Inn and Cowell Beach, where Jon and Danielle's wedding was held,  are in the background.

Sheeeeesh!

So much for those kayakers in my post.  They were luckeeee!

Happy Birth Days

Baby Jillian has arrived into the extended Bayly clan and we are so happy for Kristen, Chris and Devon and Grandma and Grandpa too.  She's a lucky little girl!  Jillian joins two of our bunch in recent birthdays.

Coincidentally, Kevin's and Lauren's birthdays were this week - only 4 days apart from each other - so we celebrated them together.  As it turns out, Baby Jillian and Lauren share the same birthday.

Drew came home for the weekend so it was really nice!  But we missed our Lauren...still at school.
Drew and I and the future Bride and Groom, Kevin and Lauren

Kevin spent the day with me and we went wine tasting in the Livermore Valley.  We had a really nice day together while Lauren spent the day shopping with her Mom.  It was a real treat for me to have a day with Kevin - more like a fun birthday for me! (Well, I did do all the work all those years ago...) But Kevin came away with a few bottles of really nice wine at the end of the day.  He liked the Thomas Coyne Zinfandel and their dessert wine called "Sweet Emilie" which is named after the winemaker's wife, Emilie Coyne.  She heard it was his birthday so she autographed the bottle for him.  After that, we went to another one of our favorite wineries, Las Positas, which is owned by our neighbors at the lake.  They make amazingly great wines!

While we were at the Thomas Coyne winery, we happened on the crushing of the grapes:

Poor guy...didn't know his picture was being taken  :)

Happy Birth Day to all the November Scorpios!

No Shave November

If the man in your life would like to go without shaving for a whole month - this is the place for him!

                                                                 Movember.com

Kevin's office is all in on this endeavor to raise money to fight prostate cancer.  Kevin loves it because if you are supporting the fundraiser, you're not supposed to shave for the whole month of November!   I guess the Movember.com website wants participants to grow a mustache (hence "Movember") but Kevin is calling  it "No Shave November" and is so enthusiastic that he's not shaving his whole face!  For a month!  Lauren is less than enthsued however because it seems Kevin grows porcupine quills for whiskers. I can't wait to see him in a full month's worth of beard.  And then see him shave it off immediately on December 1.

If you want to donate toward the cure for Prostate Cancer, you can go to the following link and donate - any amount ... $5 will be great!  Here's the link:

Mennonite Girls Can Cook!

I found a really fun website for good recipes!  Don't ask me how I found it because I have no clue!  It was just one of those things when you're bored and fishing around the web for something interesting.  Anyway, some of their recipes look really good.  It's not gourmet cuisine but I found a bunch of stuff I'd like to try and they even have a separate category of Gluten-Free recipes and I love that because Giovanna is gluten-free and now I have some stuff to make for her!

Here's the link:

Anyway, I'll keep it it my favorites in the sidebar for awhile and see how it goes....

Dreamy Beach Wedding

Isn't this the prettiest place for a wedding? Dave and I went to the lovely ocean-side wedding of Jon and Danielle in Santa Cruz.  Jon is Kevin's future brother-in-law (his fiance Lauren's brother).  It was a beautiful day and the setting at Cowell Beach was gorgeous.  The flowers are so pretty too...

Danielle and Jon.  Husband and Wife.  October 22, 2011.
Congratulations!
We could hear the surf in the background.  Just lovely.

Cowell Beach sunset.

Such a beautiful view at the reception

The view from our room the next morning at The Dream Inn - near Cowell Beach and the Boardwalk.  Dave and I celebrated our own 1st Wedding Anniversary at The Dream Inn.  Actually, Dave was deployed to Alaska on our first anniversary so I spent it with Boomp and Ging...but Dave and I celebrated a couple of months later...
probably in October of 1975...

Uh - What does he think he's doing?  The waves are only 6 inches high ! ????

Okay.  Now I get it.  He's kayaking.  I thought it was a surfboard.

Lovely setting for an after-wedding breakfast.

We saw Kevin and his Lauren at the Sunday breakfast hosted by Lauren's parents, who were so nice to include us.  It was a treat to get to see Kevin and Lauren again.  I just can't believe I didn't get a picture of them.
Serious women's volleyball tournament going on here on the beach outside the restaurant.

Dave was looking for Misty May and Kerry Walsh.

Dave and I took off the next day for a drive along the coast.  These Santa Cruz dogs have a sweet life!

A lucky dog who's best friend loves him.  What a life!

The Santa Cruz coastline

We found a Japanese tourist to take our picture.  We figured he would be fairly experienced at taking pictures.

Downtown Santa Cruz

The Santa Cruz Boardwalk.  I took the kids here a few times when they were young.  They would have liked to have gone there
a lot...I took them there as much as I could handle.  (OK - I was not a fun, party mom...)

Sunday at the beach...

There's the Dream Inn in the background

This is the Santa Cruz harbor.  Dave and I went out for a sail a few years ago from here when our good friend (and experienced sailor) Doug took us on an ocean coastline sail.  Dave was 1st mate.  Coincidentally, he's my first mate too.
;)
Best Wishes Jon and Danielle for many happy years together.  We enjoyed being there at the beginning of your journey!
